This program revolves around the existence of many patients dispersed in established zones surrounding SALFA health centers and does not solicit anything except for the detection and treatment of these patients at religious health centers such as at a SALFA facility. Initially, activities will be centered around 14 intervention zones, overseen by either a nurse or a doctor. These localities include the Menabe Region, Melaky Region, Southwest, Anosy Region, Androy Region, Southeast, Vatovavy Fitovinany Region, and East Region. Selection criteria for these regions is dependent upon an existing elevated prevalence of leprosy in these zones.
The goal of SALFA is to:
- Pursue the elimination of leprosy in isolated zones, targeting the patients in those villages with active detection /testing and early treatment.
- Reduce the prevalence of disabilities due to leprosy, and undertaking the responsibility of these patients by the required norms.
The realization of these goals will depend upon the creation of a community base which would be under the direct responsibility of the corresponding SALFA health center. The village health agent would participate in the sensitization process, direct cases towards the SALFA health center, and ensure proper treatment and follow-up.
The SALFA health centers would be responsible for detection/testing and treatment of the patients along with undertaking the care for any complication. SALFA headquarters would be responsible for planning the program activities, management of available resources, as well as regular follow-ups concerning the operational working of the program. Technical training will be provided for more effective outcomes. This entire program will be with the cooperation of the Ministry of Health, SALFA headquarters and the corresponding centers. Our long-standing partners are the Norwegian Mission and the Association Francaise Raoul Follereau. We seek the opening of another partner, that of the American Leprosy Mission.
