Community Facets of the Project:
Community actions, put into operation by three NGO's: ASOS, SALFA, and CARE, are targeted at having the communities be aware of their responsibilities on a perpetual basis; each community would be accountable for the prevention and treatment of malaria, making sure that information and health supplies/products are accessible.

Specific Objectives:
During a five year period:
  • 60% of the targeted population (pregnant women and children less than five years of age) will sleep
  • 75% of children less than five years of age who are afflicted by fever/malaria will receive the appropriate treatment (palustop) within 24 hours after the initial occurrence of symptoms;
  • 60% of pregnant women will receive prophylactic treatment against malaria during their pregnancy
INTERVENTION ZONES FOR THE COMMUNITY FACET This project will cover a total of 47 districts in endemic regions and coastal areas of Madagascar.
These include each of the SALFA NGO health centers within the following nine districts:
Toliara I, II, Morombe, Ankazoabo, Fort Dauphin, Amboasary-Sud, Ambovombe Androy, Ikongo, and Ifanadiana.

Targeted Population
  • Children less than five years of age: 1 200 000
  • Pregnant women: 175 000
Community Activities concerning the Anti-Malarial Campaign:
  • Training of health agents regarding the prevention of malaria, social marketing, techniques for message communication
  • Taking responsibility for simple cases of malaria in village homes;
  • Promoting the utilization of insecticide-impregnated mosquito nets;
  • Selling of Palustop
