SALFA SAMBAVA STORY

1985 : The approval of the Health Department of the Malagasy Lutheran Church (SALFA Headquarters) about opening a Dispensary for Sambava is officially pronounced during the meeting of the Malagasy Lutheran Church of Soavinandriana, District of Antalaha. The electors chose between Maromokotra Antalaha and Soaviandriana Sambava for the place to build it and Soaviandriana Sambava has been chosen. This District was among the districts of the SPA synod and Pastor RALAIVAO Joseph was the President of the Synod.

1986:
June: The General Director of the SALFA –Dr QUANBECK Stanley- and Dr ANDRIANIRINA Norbert came with the starting equipments and medicines for the Dispensary. Because of these two reasons: there was not a house ready for the Dispensary in Soavinandriana and the Authority in the District refused to give an authorization to build a Dispensary in Soavinandriana; the Synod rent a house in Sambava town for the Dispensary. The work was developing and gotten a parcel from the Authority to build the Dispensary in Ampandrozonana.
July 9: The Dispensary has its Commettee for the first time.Dr ANDRIANIRINA Norbert and the Nurse TILAHY Fidel have started it
September: it has an Accountant, a Cashier, a Distributor of medicines and a guard.

1987:
June: The Laboratory has been opened; M. SOLO Jean Louis has started it and he still works for it.
July: The Dispensary has gotten one more doctor and more paramedical workers.

1988:
The Tuberculosis Project and the Dentistry have been implanted. M JOELSON Augustin Alfred and Dr RAVONIARIVELO Isabelle have respectively started them and still work for them.
1990:
February: The Ophthalmology Project began to exist also and Dr RAMBOAHANTA Lalao Jeanine was the first Responsible. It was the second Ophthalmology Project of the SALFA in Madagascar.
1991:
The construction of the SALFA Hospital building of Sambava was started in Ampandrozonana.
1992:
The Ophthalmology Project of Sambava stopped working because the management of the Ophthalmology Department was turned back to its Headquarters in Antsirabe.
December:
The construction of the Sambava Hospital was completely finished in Ampandrozonana and the Dispensary was moved there. Dr RANDRIAMIHAJA Roger was the Head of the Hospital that time.

1992-1993-1994-1995:
The Dispensary worked well as it expected and many Dispensary Heads have alternatively been working there.

1995:
October, the Hospital got an X-ray studio. M. RATSARAMIAFARA Dieudonné was the first X-ray Technician and still works in it.

1996:
Dr Handry RAKOTO was the Head of the Dispensary. The Committee Direction began to extend the Dispensary to become a Hospital. The construction was done on time but the Hospital began to work only in 2002 because of the Health Ministry strategy.

2002:
Because of the politic event of 2002 in Madagascar, Dr Handry RAKOTO had to be moved and Dr ANDRIAMAHAZOSOA Lala took his place.

2003:
The Ophthalmology started to work again and Dr RAHELINIRINA Irène was the responsible of it till 2004. After her, Dr RAZAFINIMPANANA Nary was in order and till now. During this time also, the house for the Ophthalmologist and the Ophthalmology Operating theatre suite were built.

2005:
The Hospital confronted with a serious crisis. It was because of the economical crisis of the Region, political and management crisis of the Synod and social crisis of the Hospital. It is important to mention that the SPA has divided into 2 synods in 2004 and the Hospital of Sambava became a belonging of the new Synod: North East Synod (SPAA). And also because of the problem mentioned above, it was placed under the management of the Hospital of Vohemar in the beginning of 2005.
April, the President of the Synod, some of the members of the Committee Director of the Hospital of Vohemar have decided to technically support the Hospital of Sambava. They rebuild the Ophtalmology building to become an Operating theatre suite and Maternity buildings for the Hospital of Sambava for the financial autonomy of the Hospital. Dr José Helmin RANDRIANAMPY was nominated to set up the new strategy.

The Committee Director of the Hospital has stopped both Dr ANDRIAMAHAZOSOA Lala working as Head and M. ZAFIMANDIMBY Angelin as Manager of the Hospital and put a temporary Head on her place and the Hospital was under the control of the Committee Director of the Hospital of Vohemar.

September, Dr José Helmin was sent to be an interim Head for the Hospital as it was almost a dead Hospital that time.

October, the Operating theatre suite began to be operational, as well as the Maternity. Since then, it was in progress but the debts were still there and in amount.

2006:

March, Dr José Helmin became the Head of the Hospital. He was also the first surgeon who started the surgery and the Maternity works of the Hospital.
